Promoting communication in the intensive care unit (ICU) between nonspeaking patients and healthcare providers
內容摘要:
Effective communication is critical to patients’ quality of care and active participation in their recovery in medical settings. However, patient-provider communication in the intensive care unit (ICU) is constantly challenged, especially when patients are nonspeaking due to, for instance, ventilation to assist with respiration. Besides, some patients are unable write due to the use of intravenous drip or wrist restraints. Yet, healthcare providers may not use appropriate non-speech strategies to promote communication between them and their nonspeaking patients.
In this talk, Cissy will first introduce Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) systems, including different types of AAC and various client populations that can benefit from AAC to support language development and effective communication. Then, she will discuss the current barriers to communication in the intensive care unit (ICU). She will present the results of her survey study on patients’ and providers’ perspectives on effective communication and suggest future directions in research and practice.
